No.251 - Boris Retreats to his Bunker

Dear James,

What a day! Tonight thirty eight Junior Ministers and Aids have asked Boris Johnson to resign. You, of course, will not be one of those ‘considering his position’. Yet. Your one abiding characteristic as a politician is blind loyalty to whomsoever may be your leader at the time. Had Sir Oswald Moseley achieved his dream of becoming your party leader, he could have counted on you! Yet now you have to decide whether to abandon the sinking ship or stay loyal to its drowning captain. Difficult one eh James?

During this tumultuous day as your government disintegrates, I have no doubt that you will have been clinging on to the claim that Boris Johnson’s success in the 2019 election gives him a mandate to continue until the next election. If only that were true! The political context has changed dramatically since 2019 and today the polls show Boris is the least trusted member of a cabinet and that your party is losing voters in droves. Why? Because your leader has In the last three years revealed himself as incompetent, deceitful and lacking a smidgen of integrity and honesty. In a word he has been revealed as a liar.

Boris Johnson is congenitally incapable of telling the truth about anything. Four days ago, Chris Pincher MP - aka ‘Arse Pincher’ to some of his closest colleagues – admitted to groping two members of the Carlton Club last Wednesday. Boris’s immediate instinct was to brush it under the carpet, claiming that he had not heard the rumours about this MP when he appointed him as a deputy chief whip in January this year. Yesterday, Simon McDonald, a former permanent secretary at the foreign office, could

no longer hide his anger and went public that Boris had indeed been informed of this matter and that therefore Boris was lying yet again! Boris was forced to offer yet another apology. And this was enough for those with the remaining dregs of decency in the cabinet to submit their dramatic resignations at 5pm yesterday. First to go was Savjd Javid, one time Chancellor and more recently Minister for Health. Moments later Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor pulled the plug with a devastating letter listing issues of behavioural standards and integrity in his decisions Two of the most senior cabinet Ministers had gone in five minutes. Today Javid made a devastating statement about his resignation to parliament.

What took them so long? James, the whole cabinet is in a state of collapse and your party is mired in sleaze and corruption. The charade is over. The end for Boris is nigh. The man who wanted to become Prime Minister but couldn't be Prime MInister is facing his end. Yet he remains defiant. He remains ‘bullish’! Today he’s replaced Sunak and David with members of his remaining cabinet whose only qualification for their jobs is loyalty to Boris. Rees-Mogg, Truss and Raab continue in their roles as supine apologists for the indefensible. In effect though the old Etonian ‘mission to rule’ is over.

James, our nation is in crisis. We have been reduced to the crazy men of Europe. Of course, what we are really seeing is the Tory Party civil war erupting into the open. Johnson has regularly represented the extreme right of your party simply because he has no agenda of his own, no values of his own and no integrity. Now the nation has to face the question of what are we and what do we want to be? There is still a long journey ahead.

Tonight, Boris is in his bunker, surrounded by his die hard loyalists. So far thirty eight  of your fellow junior minsters and aids have resigned. Will you have the guts to become number thirty nine, James?
